This Boston-based outfit are closely associated with the J. Geils Band – bassist Danny Klein was a founding member, Geils himself produced and guests on this CD and keyboards player Seth Justman also helps out.  More importantly perhaps for the sound of this release though, guitarist Ken Pino (brother of singer and harpman Babe Pino) spent a decade with Johnny Copeland; there are four Copeland covers, and there is plenty of the soulful intensity (both in the vocals and guitar work) associated with the late Texas bluesman.

Other covers come from Magic Slim, Joe Hughes, Earl Forrest, Otis Rush, Mack Rice and Delbert McClinton – so Stonecrazy have taste too, plus the ability to make convincing, contemporary focused blues.  As good as anything on the larger labels, they deserve to be better known.
