I had the pleasure of meeting J.B. back in 1978.  He was an incredibly talented slide guitar player and a great guy with a kind and mild manner. He lived in Illinois, but was staying with some of my friends in New England while he played at local clubs and colleges with his original band, the Hawks. Sometime that year, he gathered some musicians from the Boston area and called them the New Hawks.  The year before he passed, he was living in one of my apartments.  He was only 57 when he passed due to diabetes.  His nephew, Lil' Ed, now follows in his footsteps with his band "The Blue Imperials" on Alligator Records in Illinois.  After his passing, J.B. won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album of 1985 for the album Blues Explosion.  J.B. also released records with Chance Records, Vanguard Records, and Varrick Label, and is now honored in the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, TN.
